*** TEST PATTERNS INSTRUCTIONS ***
THIS PROGRAM IS USEFUL FOR COMPUTER
USERS AND SERVICE TECHNICIANS FOR
ADJUSTING COLORS AND FOCUS OF T.V.
SETS AND MONITORS.
* COLOR BARS - PROVIDES SIXTEEN (16)
COLOR BARS AND PRESSING ANY KEY WILL
IDENTIFY THE COLORS BY NAME. PRESS
ANOTHER KEY TO RETURN TO THE MENU
* SOLID COLOR SCREENS ARE PROVIDED FOR
SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS OR VIEWING OF THE
THREE (3) BASIC TRANSMITTED COLORS.
* THE REST OF THE PATTERNS ARE USED
FOR FOCUSING AND ALIGNMENT. DOTS AND
CROSSHATCH PATTERNS WILL BE REVERSED
IN COLORS WHEN A KEY IS PRESSED. TO
RETURN TO THE MENU PRESS ANOTHER KEY.
*** MAKING THE ADJUSTMENTS ***
* ALLOW THE SET TO WARM UP BEFORE
MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS. TURN OFF THE
AUTOMATIC FINE TUNING (ATF) AND ANY
OTHER SWITCHES FOR SPECIAL FILTERS,
ETC. ADJUST THE CHANNEL SELECTION
FINE TUNING ADJUSTMENT TO OBTAIN THE
BEST PICTURE. USE ONLY THE STANDARD
'CUSTOMER' CONTROLS UNLESS YOU ARE
AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE TECHNICIAN.
SELECT A NON-COLOR PATTERN AND ADJUST
THE FOCUS CONTROL FOR THE SHARPEST
PICTURE. VIEW THE SCREEN FROM A
DISTANCE OF ABOUT FIVE (5) TIMES THE
HEIGHT OF THE SCREEN WHILE CHECKING
THE FOCUS.
* NEXT SELECT THE COLOR BAR TEST PATTERN
FROM THE MENU. ADJUST THE HUE,TINT,
PICTURE,COLOR INTENSITY,SHARPNESS,
AND CONTRAST. WHEN YOU ARE SATISFIED
TURN ON THE SWITCHES YOU TURNED OFF.
*** A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION ***
* THREE COLOR GUNS ARE USUALLY USED TO
ILLUMINATE PHOSPHOR DOTS FOUND ON THE
SCREEN. EACH GUN IS ALIGNED ON FOR
DOTS OF THE PROPER COLOR. RED,GREEN,
AND BLUE ARE MIXED TO MAKE ALL THE
OTHER COLORS. MIXING THESE COLORS
IS NOT THE SAME AS MIXING PAINT,
BECAUSE TRANSMITTED LIGHT ACTS IN A
DIFFERENT MANNER THAN REFLECTED LIGHT.
MIXING RED AND GREEN PRODUCES YELLOW
INSTEAD OF A MUD COLOR. COLORS WHICH
CONTAIN WHITE ARE CALLED DESATURATED.
* MAGNETIC FIELDS CAN CAUSE A BLOTCHY
DISCOLORATION IN THE PICTURE MAKING
IT NECESSARY TO DEGAUSS (DEMAGNETIZE)
THE SET BEFORE MAKING THE COLOR
ADJUSTMENTS. SPEAKER BOXES TOO CLOSE
TO THE SET CAN CAUSE DISTORTION IN
THE CORNERS OF THE PICTURE. IT MAY
TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS FOR THE SET TO
RECOVER AFTER MOVING THE SPEAKER.
* A WHITE DOT GENERATOR IS USED TO TEST
STATIC CONVERGENCE AND TO AID IN
ADJUSTMENTS. IF THE DOT PATTERNS ARE
TRIANGLES OF COLORED DOTS IT IS TIME
TO CALL A SERVICE TECHNICIAN. A DIM
WHITE DOT NEXT TO THE REGULAR DOTS
MAY BE THE RESULT OF AN OLDER VIC-2
CIRCUIT IN YOUR COMPUTER. A DIM DOT
WHICH IS COLORED IS USUALLY AN
INDICATION OF A POORLY ADJUSTED STATIC
CONVERGENCE.
* A CROSSHATCH PATTERN IS USED TO CHECK
DYNAMIC CONVERGENCE AND FOR AIDING IN
ADJUSTMENTS. LOOK AT THE EDGES OF
THE PATTERN AFTER THE SET HAS BEEN
ADJUSTED FOR FOCUS AND SHARPNESS.
DOUBLE IMAGES AND FUZZINESS ARE SIGNS
OF POOR ALIGNMENT. THIS ADJUSTMENT
ALSO REQUIRES A SERVICE TECHNICIAN.
** FOR THE NOT SO MECHANICAL MINDED **
TRY DISPLAYING THE TEST PATTERNS TO
SEE IF YOUR SET NEEDS ADJUSTMENT.
IF YOUR SET NEEDS ADJUSTMENT AND YOU
ARE NERVOUS OF TOUCHING OR RESETTING
THE 'CUSTOMER' COLOR CONTROLS; ASK A
FELLOW COMPUTER BUFF TO MAKE THE
ADJUSTMENTS. MOST USER GROUPS ARE
FILLED WITH KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE
WILLING TO HELP OTHERS.
